Meme Take five books off your bookshelf. 2. Book #1 -- first sentence 3. Book #2 -- last sentence on page fifty 4. Book #3 -- second sentence on page one hundred 5. Book #4 -- next to the last sentence on page one hundred and fifty 6. Book #5 -- final sentence of the book 7. Make the five sentences into a paragraph:I'll use the convenient pile of five books on my desk. Having placed in my mouth sufficient bread for three minutes' chewing, I withdrew my powers of sensual perception and retired into the privacy of my mind, my eyes and face assuming a vacant and preoccupied expression. This treatment is convenient, since in all essential things the sea state has the same characteristics, but its development can not be followed through the various typical stages as can the development of the land state. Hillocks were levelled to the ground. The whole mass knocked me down and buried me underneath their feet. But didn't they die out with the dinosaurs? The books:
1. At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O'Brien 2. The State by Franz Oppenheimer 3. The Huns by E.A.Thompson 4. Moscow to the End of the Line by Venedikt Erofeev 5. The Call of Distant Mammoths by Peter D. Ward
That worked rather well. Good meme. Pat pat. | | Monday, May 10th, 2004 | | 8:56 pm |
A recipe given to me by one of my bosses
225g of the best prawns you can afford or get (those ready-cooked with shells still on work a treat) 1 hot chili pepper 1/2 a bunch of coriander bulb of garlic 4 peppers of various colours oyster mushrooms normal mushrooms basmati rice wholegrain rice some oil 1oz. butter black pepper salt Preheat oven to 200 degrees C. Make mixed rice happen. Shell prawns. Make sure prawns are dead, because the process of shelling seems designed to cause maximum pain to any that aren't. Remove heads, tails and legs from prawns, and prawn brain juice from hands. Chop peppers (not the chili one) and place in roasting tin. Place oyster mushrooms in roasting tin too. Also 4-5 whole cloves of garlic. Drizzle with oil. Season with pepper and salt, also perhaps some herbs. Roast for 25 minutes. Grill for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, across town: Heat a splash of oil and about an ounce of butter in a frying pan, very gently. Add remaining garlic (maybe eight cloves or so) crushed or shopped finely. Add coriander, also chopped finely. Add chili pepper, deseeded and, not wanting to be left out, chopped finely too. Heat very gently until smell drives hunger to the point of action. Add other mushrooms (quartered) and prawns. Cook on high for 2-3 minutes or until things seem likely to burn. Combine with rice and roasted vegetables. Consume. White wine also good. With reasonably fresh prawns, we can testify that this works wonders. Especially good served in gardens around sunset, with overhanging trees and scent of blossom. We then discussed compost. BANDWAGON! 'I want everyone who reads this to ask me 3 questions, no more no less. Ask me anything you want. Then I want you to go to your journal, copy and paste this allowing your friends (including myself) to ask you anything' | | Saturday, April 10th, 2004 | | 6:03 pm |
Coffee
We have a very small cafetière. Most people would time this by pouring in the water, noting the time, and returning in, say, five minutes. Some might time it as the length of an advert break or song on the TV. Today I realised that my method, perfectly tailored to my nature, is to judge it by how long it takes me to get distracted. If I've waited for it to brew, forgotten what I was doing, wandered off and then remembered it, it's ready. | | Wednesday, April 7th, 2004 | | 2:07 pm |

I am the improv diva
Was singing this in the shower. Didn't notice the slight amendment for several minutes. When you're alone and life is making you lonely You can always go - downtown When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry Seems to help, I know - downtown Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty How can you lose?
The lights are much brighter there You can forget all your troubles, replace them with bears So go downtown....Hannah was amused. | | Monday, April 5th, 2004 | | 12:20 am |

One joule left
Apologies to Tara. Flatwarming sounds fun, but I'm a trifle tired. So much so that I had to ask someone at work what "when" meant. Never a good sign. (Although the person I asked once got caught in an A-level exam explaining to the girl next to her how to spell "the". I suppose some stress more than others...) So I'm going to use the remainder of that lonely little joule falling over gracefully into bed. Oh yeah, and my (randomly-chosen) horse in the Grand National sweepstake at work fell over after about three yards. Pah. Night all. | | Friday, April 2nd, 2004 | | 5:50 pm |
